Watermelon Peak Season
In the U.S., watermelon is available year-round. Domestic watermelon is available from April until November, with peak production in May, June, July, and August. Imported watermelon is available from October through June, with peak production months in March, April, and May. The U.S. is the leading exporter of watermelon; 88% if U.S. exports go to Canada, the rest go to Japan, Mexico, Russia, Bermuda, and France.
I bring this up because we had two watermelons this weekend and they were both quite good. (one seeded, one seedless) As a matter of fact the Saturday melon might have been the tastiest watermelon I have ever had. One of my regrets from last summer was the boys did not get to eat more watermelon and I plan to remedy that this summer. Watermelon consumption (quality watermelons) has always been one of my guiding factors for determining just how good the summer was (along with water time, tan lines, # of outings and BBQ)
I had always heard that watermelon season did not begin until the Juneteenth celebration. Now that I know the domestic season starts in April that should adds two more months of quality watermelons.
